What an interesting shot! this is amazing, very intriguing. Its also a good sight into Japans Tattooing history, in the Philippine islands tattooing used to be a widespread tradition, now its just reserved for the tribes and people conscious of their roots. We have similar full body Tattoos, but different in design. Most signify different accomplishments and ranks in the community, it would be great to learn more about Japans Irezumi. Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you like it, Cagpotom. I personally have no tattoos, and when I was in the Philippines, I saw no tattoos on anyone there, either. I suppose one has to go to certain places or islands in the Philippines to see what you mention ?
Hi, Yes, its a dying tradition among the masses. It’s surprisingly having a revival thanks most in part to Filipino’s overseas, looking back at their roots, particulary in Hawaii. To be garuanteed to see anything you would have to visit the mountain tribes, or some of the isolated groups in the Visayas. You can still actually get the tattoo the traditional way, and many return to the mountain province to get it done with the Bone spike, theirs a name for that tool but i cannot remember it.
Actually when the Spanish first landed in the Philippines, in the Visayas, they dubbed it "Islas de los Pintados" or "The Islands of the Painted ones" , as traditional Visayan tattooing covered entire bodies, Im more familar with the Bontoc Tribal tattooing, they get tattoos based on their rank in the community and life achievements. Many also believe they hold magical powers to add strength to bearer (hence many Warriors had many tattoos). Infamously the Mountain tribes get a tattoo called a "Chaklag" when they take their first head of an enemy.
I can go on and on, these things are very interesting to me at least haha. Thanks for sharing! your shots are all thought provoking, i cannot thank you enough for uploading all this for the world to see! bring it back to roots! Thanks, Peace, Kapayapaan! haha
I didn’t know about the Pinoy body tattoos! Thank you for more education on Pinoy culture. I have hung out with Samoans and we have enjoyed locking ourselves in office break rooms and copy rooms in order that I may get a glimpse of the amazing tattoos under the trousers and shirts of young Samoan men. I have even hung out with a Samoan prince who had these amazing tattoos all over his body. Ofcourse the designs would be different from both Japanese (Yakuza?) and Pinoy cultures but I love how this form of body design is actually quite universal. I think the polynesians used dog teeth or something like it. I’m a wimp, couldn’t do it myself. Respect to all who endure that process.
Definately! One very intriguing fact is that throughout all the Austronesian People, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pacific Islands to Hawaii have tattooing in their culture. Thats one art form that has remained through time, imagine that! our ancestors during the great migrations in the mighty Paraw Barangay Outriggers all passed on these traditions and culture, and what remains today, even though they are different over time and now unique in their own sense, all came from the same wave of people and family. To my knowledge, the Filipino’s used dog teeth as well, other than bamboo and Carabao (water buffalo) horns. (all sharpened of course). Theirs a nice book called "The last Filipino Headhunters" that has a lot of nice shots of the mountain tribes tattooing culture.
Of course, all this was over a very long time.
Myself, i am also a pussy but i want to get a visayan or bontoc tattoo on my arm someday, i have roots in both regions so it’s not a problem choosing. I might have a bottle or two of some Tanduay rhum beforehoand though.. haha
Listen to you two scared cats with no tattoos…mind if I join you ? I don’t have any, either !
When one of my daughters was in High School, she asked me if she could go get tatooed. I said "Sure!". She said "What? You’re not going to say NO ? You’re not going to try to STOP ME ?". Nope…go get yourself covered with them.
With that, she decided against it, and 10 years later, still doesn’t have a tattoo !
LOL.
