I got my loon tattoo in honor of a place I hold very dear to me; my family is originally from Canada, and up there we have a house on a lake in a small town near Toronto called Apsley. The lake is inhabited by loons, hundreds of them, and I remember being a little kid and hearing the haunting noises they make at night; they sound melancholy and sad, and when I was little I always thought they were ghosts. I still return to that lake as often as I can. It’s a very speci
al place to me and the loons represent it in my mind.
The book The History of Love by Nicole Krauss is about only loving one person. It’s about not being able to let go of them no matter how much distance or time separates you. It, like the loon’s call, is a sad and intensely haunting novel that follows an old man named Leo and his life in old age.He has lost the one girl he ever loved. Leo’s intense love for her, Alma, and his inability to forget about her makes me think of my own inability to leave the lake behind. I won’t ever have another place like that; just as Leo won’t ever have another Alma. – India
